If you have asphalt shingles, you may have noticed blistering on their surface. The bubbles as they are now should not be a cause for worry, but gaining some knowledge on what has caused the shingles to bubble and what this could mean in the future for your roof is a smart thing to do. After all, you probably don’t want to use our Vancouver roof repair service. So here’s what you should know.

Moisture may be trapped in the shingles

Back when the shingles were being manufactured, moisture may have gotten trapped inside. Once the shingles are on your roof, they become exposed to heat that could cause both the shingles and the moisture inside of them to expand. This is how the bubbles could end up appearing on your roof.

Your roof may not have adequate ventilation

If it’s heat that causes bubbles to appear, then other sources of heat besides the sun can also be a culprit. This could be the case if your roof does not have the type of ventilation system that it needs. Without proper ventilation, the roof can get too hot and as a result those bubbles could form.

So, what should you do if your shingles have bubbles on them? Your roof will remain fully protected as long as the granules do not become unattached from the shingles with bubbles on them. The popping of the bubbles, however, could cause the granules to become unattached. Once this happens, the asphalt of the shingles will be less protected from the UV rays of the sun. Over time, areas of your roof with popped blisters can be vulnerable to leaks and roof damage.

To prevent the bubbles from popping, avoid stepping on your roof and try to prevent debris from falling on the shingles. This could mean trimming tree branches or removing trees altogether, if leaves or acorns frequently fall on to the roof. You could also have the asphalt shingles in question replaced–we’d be happy to provide a free quote from our roofing contractors in Vancouver.
